traditional meals

Complete full meals are gone from my life.  The regular practice of having some veggies, a carb, and a large source of protein is gone.  I have adapted.  I still get all sources of the food pyramid, but space them out throughout the day.  This was a list of my meals for today:

Breakfast:  1 cup of coffee, bread, and black beans

Lunch:  2 bananas, 1 avocado, and a can of Coca-Cola

Dinner:  pasta only with olive oil and a cup of coffee

I really could have done without the Coke.  I think may have two more meals tonight.  It will probably include steamed red cabbage, and some zucchini.  The last one probably pasta with sauteed onions and black beans.

Any thoughts to stretch out that dollar for food?

2 Plays for $5

One doesn't have to shell out $50 to see good theatre.  Most theatres offer special discounts, periodic deals, but the best bang for the buck are the pay what you can previews.  I was lucky enough to see 2 productions this week for a total of $5!!  I even brought a friend who is currently unemployed.

The Minotaur at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, and Henry V at Folger Theatre.  Both are within walking distance to those on the Hill.  I won't offer critiques of the plays here.  It's too late to take advantage of the PWYC as they are offered for the first or first few performances.  So always check calenders of some of the local companies and see what they have to offer.  Please, share your insights on deals offered from other theatre companies

Staying local with feet

Weekend Metro rates range from $3.40-$7.00 for one roundtrip.  So, meeting up w/ friends for a mimosas must take that into account.  $3.40 can still buy one a cup of coffee at most local coffee shops in DC.  Right?  My favorite ones I can walk to are Peregrine, Sidamo, and Sova.

This leads me to wonder would an unlimited ride system be of benefit in DC.  If one has a 9-5 career with 20 Metro roundtrips and 4 roundtrip on weekends, that cost will range from $97.60-$263.NYC subway system charges $2.50 per ride with a 30 day unlimited ride ticket for $104.

inauguration saturday

It was tempting to go out, but i knew i needed to spend $0 today.  There is a new Indian takeout in the neighborhood, Chicken and Rice, that I wanted to try, but I will wait for a better occasion.  I am not suggesting that Obama doesn't deserve another term.  I just know that I can make rice at home.

I said good bye to my Netflixx subscription today.  Saving a little over $9/month.

Intro

Hello,

After the payroll tax cut extension ended, I immediately had to make some budget cuts.  Additionally, this new year brought a few large emergency expenses.  This blog is primarily about me trying to make it in DC and live well on a budget.  Hopefully, my experiences will help others, and your readership will educate me as well.  Thanks for reading.
